There isn’t much to do in this small upstate New York rural town for young adults. There are a few bars, a bowling alley, miscellaneous fast-food joints, and a movie theater. After numerous repeated visits to any local hang-out spots, they became boring and cumbersome. That is why on this particular night I decided to be different.

Leaving town for a few hours became an adventure when I was behind the wheel of a car. Deciding to venture away from the safety of the highway I discovered many new and exciting routes out of this small town. These roads usually led to outside country routes for neighboring countries. The driving around was therapeutic for the monotonies of life and they usually were hours in duration.

After a quick dinner and movie in the neighboring county, my friend and I entered back into our small town. Outside the car was a slow, steady rain. The street lights reflected off the pockets of water and leaves on the road. It was about two o’clock in the morning and there were no houses on this road. On one side was the cemetery and on the other side a guard rail protecting motorists from a steep drop off. About halfway, or a mile up the road our conversation was rudely interrupted by a chance encounter with a jogging female. I swerved suddenly to avoid striking this pedestrian. She kept her stride and continued jogging, not seeming to be phased by almost colliding with my car . Most peculiar about this situation was that this woman was all white. She seemed to be comprised of a thick white fog, and you could see through her. Naturally her appearance was most shocking to us. In addition to what we were seeing we discussed why a female would be jogging on a steep road, late at night, in the rain. It was so odd to us that when I reached the top of the hill, I turned around and slowly crept back down.

I was driving slowly  down the hill hoping that my imagination had got the best of me. I was certain that this woman was real and that I might ask her if she needed any assistance upon approaching her again. Talking about the situation with my friend, I was taken by surprise when I turned my head and looked outside. She was jogging along with my car! Cautiously I rolled down the window in the car. The air was still outside and it was eerily quiet. Even the rain fell silently as if it transitioned into a fine mist within minutes. I called out to the woman inquiring if she needed any assistance. In any normal situation it would be expected that the woman would stop, or at least slow down, let alone provide me with a verbal answer to my question. She did none of this. The female jogger continued down the road without a lag in her step. As I followed her down the hill my friend and I both watched as she seemed to fade upon approaching the road entering the cemetery.
