We must be accountable and responsible as families, corporations, and government officials for our part in the economic malfeasance which casts a psychical cloud of fear and angst across our great land.

<g:plusone size="small" count="true"></g:plusone>

Economics play an integral role in our everyday lives. From the grocery store to planning for our retirement, economics affect our daily and long-term financial plans. It is easy to see the financial impact that the broader economy, our economic values, and the economic values of our leadership plays in our lives. What is harder to visualize is the psychic impact of economics. In order to understand how economic conditions affect us on a psychical level we must first delve a little deeper into the psychological ramifications of economic conditions.

As a family unit, there is generally a matriarch, a patriarch, and children. To compare the household unit to a corporation or to the government we must equate the matriarch and patriarch to the CEO and Board members for a corporation and to the president, congress, and senate for the government. We must also equate the children, in the family, to stockholders for a corporation or to constituents for the government.

The decision to spend, borrow, or save ultimately resides with the ruling body. These individuals propose and vote on economic issues without much direct say from those they represent. While the children, stockholders, or constituents must accept these decisions as being, in there best interest. Beacuse of this, feelings of fear, helplessness, frustration, anger, and resentment often develop when things go awry as a result of these decisions.

Generally, when economic decisions go according to plan the result provides tangible benefits. Unfortunately, the converse is also true. A good example of this is the recent housing crisis, recession, and debt crisis.

Imagine a family where mom and dad decide to buy everything on credit. When that credit runs out, they open another credit account. When their done maxing out that credit account they vote to open yet another credit account. Now mom and dad are hooked and spending 110% of their income on credit payments. Mom and dad decide to ask their employers for a raise. They each receive a raise and now open yet another line of credit. The cycle, however, is not sustainable and soon mom and dad start defaulting on their debt. Mom and dad’s credit rating goes down because of their economic malfeasance. The neighbors say “Mom and dad should have cut spending and lived within their means”. Mom and dad’s response was “But what about the children, we did it for the children”.

Ah, yes the children. What is happening to the children during all of this? How does all this affect those not making the economic decisions? At first life is grand mom and dad are spending money on new Xbox games, new furniture, electronic gadgets that create their own need; it’s like Christmas every day. Then one-day the fighting starts. The finger pointing starts. The children’s world fills with feelings of fear and angst. The austerity begins as the dilutive impact of deficit spending hits home. The entire family unit is not just financially bankrupt but morally and spiritually bankrupt as well.

Sometimes the only way to deal with debt addiction is to bite the bullet. Say enough is enough and take our bitter medicine. Continued dilution of our quality of life, stock, or currency is no longer a viable choice (It never was!). We must look at the grim short-term economic outlook as a glass half-full. It is time for us to grow up. As stewards of the family unit, the corporate unit, and the government we must realize that the day of reckoning is upon us. We must do as St. Paul said in the Bible and “Put childish things away”. We must be accountable and responsible as families, corporations, and government officials for our part in the economic malfeasance which casts a psychical cloud of fear and angst across our great land.

The price of austerity is minimal in comparison to the death of the greatest nation on earth. It is time to put aside our political agendas and differing schools of thought. It is time to look towards the future! The time is now! Every family, every corporation, and every government must do their part to put an end to the out of control deficit spending that is grinding our families, companies, and countries to a halt. It is time to put fear and angst behind us. It is time to tighten our belts and take our bitter medicine so that we can enjoy a balanced world with people that live within their means. A new world without the fear of spiritual, morale, or financial default. It is time we stop the insanity of repeating the destructive behavior patterns of the past in order to maintain the status quo. It is time we lead by example and take our rightful place as the responsible, accountable, spiritual leaders that our founding fathers were!

Psychic Julianna Day...Monkey Traps and Broken Hearts...Many years ago, after pouring out my tattered heart in a tearful storm to a dear friend ...

Monkey Traps and Broken Hearts

Psychic Julianna Day | Monkey Traps and Broken Hearts

Many years ago, after pouring out my tattered heart in a tearful storm to a dear friend … there was silence on his end of the phone. As I continued to sniffle and gasp, his voice returned – surprisingly upbeat: “Hey, kid,” he began with enthusiasm, “do you know how to make a monkey trap?”

I remember blinking my swollen eyes and stuttering out a hesitant, weak, “No …” So he told me:
First, get a coconut. On one end, cut a sort of notch. On the opposite end, cut a hole about the size of a golf ball and scoop out as much coconut meat as you can. Now you get a rope. About 12” long should do it. Slip one end of the rope through the notch on the coconut and knot it; tie the other to a stake that you’ve pounded securely into the ground. Tightly. Must be tied tightly.

Now form a ball out of some cooked rice. About the size of the hole in the coconut – just a tiny bit smaller. Very gently, tuck the rice ball into the coconut-hole. Without disturbing the shape of the ball, push it as far back into the coconut as you can.

Now wait for the monkey. You won’t have to wait long (apparently monkeys love rice) and the little monkey will spot the coconut and stick her little paw in and grab hold of the rice ball and pull it … but no. The monkey, you see, won’t be able to pull the rice ball back through the hole. Secured in her clenched fist … it won’t fit. “And that,” he concluded with a pompous flourish, “is how you trap a monkey.”

In my mind, today, it feels as though the silence that followed was an hour long. In actuality, I’m sure it was mere moments before Dan’s voice softened and he tenderly advised: “Let go of the rice, Julianna. Just let go of the rice.”
I didn’t know in those days that it was a well-used paradigm in cognitive psychology. That night, alone, with only Dan’s voice on the other end of the phone and a heart heavy and broken, I knew only that it was true.

We tell ourselves that his actions keep us hanging on. We shout in anger that she holds all of the cards, we have no control. We believe they are holding us back. Our love for them is destroying us. If we let go, we will die. We can’t …
But we can. Is it easy? No. Is it disappointing, frustrating, painful? Yes. Yet, like so many things in life, in the pain of letting go, there is the tiny nugget of understanding that –only- comes when we take that first step and open our fingers. The understanding that by focusing only on something that we can’t have, we have lost site that we are in a veritable forest of rice balls.

I know, I know: You don’t want –those- rice balls. I didn’t either. I lay by my coconut for a long time. Sometimes I even thought I heard my special rice ball rolling toward the hole … After awhile, I pulled myself to the sitting position … rubbed my eyes … looked tentatively around … and met a rice ball that I’m still with today.

Monkey traps come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they are our unwillingness to forgive a friend. Sometimes they are the rage of an unjust childhood. Sometimes they are too many cookies and not enough celery sticks. Sometimes they are deeper and darker.
We can, however, take heart – for with courage, there isn’t a coconut big enough to hold any of us!

Recently Paul the Psychic octopus picked his sixth correct World Cup soccer match...as odd as psychic octopus may seem many creatures possess psychic abilities, spiritual meaning, and cultural importance.

Recently Paul the Psychic octopus picked his sixth correct World Cup soccer match. Picking Spain to defeat Germany this amazing creature most assuredly possesses a gift for discerning the future. However, as odd as psychic octopus may seem many creatures possess psychic abilities, spiritual meaning, and cultural importance.

For example, the Native American peoples believed armadillos symbolized patience, good work ethic, and pacifism. While the badger for example represented strength, ferocity, and passion. It comes as a small surprise that many cultures at one time or another believed in animal spirits and even worshiped them.

A great example of this occurs in the Hindu religion where cows garner the attention of the devout followers of Godhead. Another good example of animal spirits in religion occurs in even more complex animistic religions. The Shinto religion provides a great example of this type of complex animistic religion.

Even the great builders of the pyramids subscribed to animal spirits in a religious capacity. Anubis believed to be the god of the dead resembled a dog. While Bast the god resembling a cat was a fierce feminine warrior. In fact, the ancient Egyptians revered animals of almost every type. Many animals even possessed supernatural powers or consorted with the gods. Even the Jews worshiped the god Molech represented by a golden calf during their exodus from Egypt.

Although Paul the psychic Octopus is in good company along side deities, animal spirits, and psychic pets from many of the world’s great cultures he is definitely not the first of his kind. Even though Paul may not become a golden idol for worship (or maybe he is already!), he surely makes it into the nostalgic sports record book without a doubt. With his sixth World Cup soccer, match prediction of Spain over Germany the psychic octopus certainly earned his rightful place in sports history (Right up there with Jimmy the Greek!).

Therefore, whether you subscribe to the spiritual nature of animals or not Paul the psychic octopus definitely makes a great case for unexplained paranormal phenomenon. At the very least, Paul should provide a source of interesting dinner conversation for quite awhile in Germany (As the Judas octopus resides there currently!).
