As one might expect his qualities resemble those of a mysterious male living secluded in the woods or in a cave. His disdain for societal values and materialism often drives him in search of spiritual answers. They also embody his humanitarian spirit. Often after finding, the answers to his spiritual quandary The Hermit will return to society in order to share his knowledge with others. In a Tarot reading The Hermit in an upright position symbolizes a time for reservation in life.

When this card is the outcome of the Tarot reading it indicates a need for deep introspection and soul searching. If the person querying the tarot spread ask a question regarding a relationship or love affair this card indicates that it is not currently the right time or person. In some instances the Hermit may symbolize a spiritual maturation or coming of age. If the Hermit appears in the reversed position in Tarot reading spreads it often indicates that one must leave their spiritual seclusion and return to the material realm.
