If you are unsure of your birth time enter 12:00. Birth time must be in GMT to be accurate. If you need help converting your birth time to UTC please refer to the table (figure 1-2) at the end of this document.

What is a Natal Chart?
A birth chart often called a “natal chart” shows the configuartion of constellations and planets in relation to the date, time, and place of your birth. It represents your personal characteristics as defined by the stars and planets you were born under. Some use these Astrological charts to help guide them through life. The basic elements of these charts include the houses, the cusps, the planets, the Medium Coeli (mid-heaven), the Imum Coeli (Nadir), the Ascendant, the Ascendant line (horizon line), and the Descendant.
The numbering of the houses (1-12) begins in the lower left quadrant and progress sequentially counterclockwise. Each house has a ruling sign based on the time, place, and date of your birth. Houses may also contain planets that further define aspects of your being. Each house also has a fixed attribute that governs a specific aspect of life (ie. house number two governs finances, house number three governs our ability to communicate, etc...).
The cusps are the lines that separate the houses. The progression of signs starts at the ascendant cusp and progresses sequentially through all twelve of the zodiac signs, in a counterclockwise direction. However, exceptions exist to this rule. Sometimes signs are skipped if the sign falls in between two cusps falling directly in a house. These signs are called intercepted signs (see the "Ruling Sign" label in the informational graphic (figure 1-1) for an example of an intercepted signs position within a house). Intercepted signs in a natal chart are very significant and should be viewed in context of the chart as a whole.
Planets appear on your chart in the position they would occupy in the sky at the time of your birth. The planets represent the energy that influences who you are, what you do, and how you interact with the world. The planets also interact with the ruling sign of the house they occupy by enhancing or mitigating the affects of that sign on the aspect of your life that the house controls. Planets also form geometric relationships with each other. These relationships may enhance or mitigate planetary aspects on your chart. Please see (figure 1-3) in the reference section for a listing of astrological geometric configurations of significance and astrological planetary symbols.
The Medium Coeli or mid-heaven is located at the southernmost (top) point of the natal chart. This point represents the highest point of the zodiac at your time of birth. This point lies on the cusp of the tenth house, which defines your career path through life. It also highlights your interactions in society as a whole. It closely resembles the Karmic lesson number in Numerology because it defines the life lessons we need to learn to enjoy spiritual growth.
The Imum Coeli resides at the Northern most point (bottom) of the natal chart directly opposing the Medium Coeli. As you may expect it deals with our inner self, as it is literally the polar opposite of the Medium Coeli. As the Medium Coeli manifests its influence on our outward self the Imum Coeli defines our internal dynamics, dialogues, and our inner child.
The Ascendant line forms the imaginary east to west horizon on the birth chart. This line connects the Ascendant (cusp of the first house) and the Descendant (cusp of the seventh house). Bisecting the heavens into top and bottom halves the ascendant or “rising sign” forms the cusp of the first house of self and dictates the rulers of all the other houses on your chart. Therefore, the Ascendant is one of the most important features on your chart.
In addition, it also provides an overall perspective of “balance” in your chart. Many Astrologers consider Charts containing an equal number of planets above and below the ascendant “balanced” charts. Moreover, this line generally dictates how we interact with the world. For example, if many of your planets fall above the ascendant you may expect a general predisposition towards being outgoing and extroverted. Conversely, a large number of planets below the ascendant may indicate a secretive, private, and, introverted individual.
